Mrs. Knickerbocker, a Marana Middle School teacher, has been awarded a $2000 Good Skin Knowledge Grant from the American Academy of Dermatology. Funding from the grant will reach more than 300 students, teaching them about skin cancer, the effects of sun damage, and about proper skin care.  Students will also learn facts about common skin, hair, and nail conditions.

As a part of the program, students will have access to  STEM supplies for learning activities  including  UV beads, UV lights, and sunblock –demonstrating how the sun's rays can affect skin.  Another fun project is students will learn about age spots and skin pores, building 3D mock-ups of layers of skin using  paint, styrofoam and sequins.

Mrs. Knickerbocker teaches the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Agricultural Science class at MMS. "This grant not only helps to fund some of my class activities, but it will help the students understand their skin and sun exposure. They will learn to better recognize cancer or skin damage in the future, which is huge, especially if they end up in an outdoor career or just walking around in the Arizona sun."
